At our training events you’ll get to know each other, meet your leader, plan your itinerary and begin preparations for an adventure of a lifetime. So put the dates in your diary and sign up today. Looking forward to meeting you already!

The Plan

The plan for this expedition is to explore the grasslands and mountains of Western China. Home to Tibetan nomads and Buddhist monasteries, the team can see a culture vastly different to their own.

Landing in Chengdu, the team will get straight into expedition life making preparations for their trip.  If they choose, they can immerse themselves at a nomads camp, before heading up to the mountains to begin their challenge phase.

Western China as a variety of landscapes to hike through. The team could cross the Amdo Grasslands between the ancient Labrang and Rebkong Monasteries, one of the largest in the Greater Tibetan region. They could look to the hills to cross high passes and alpine lakes like the Yala or Minya Gongka trek. They'll be responsible for the day-to-day management of  their team, their food and their camp as well as trekking for typically 6 hours per day. While challenging, this is what makes it so much more rewarding!

After all that hard work the team will undoubtedely want to explore some local sights, such as the Chengdu's pandas or Leshan Giant Buddha.

With all our expeditions the team plan their adventure at the first training. Until then, this is what their itinerary might go like...

N.b. Itinerary may change after team's first training event. Dates will remain the same.

Essential Info

Accommodation will be in basic guesthouses and hotels in towns. During the trekking phase, teammates will be wildcamping in tents on the hillside.

Food in this region is a mixture of soups, fried vegetables or meat; simple in nature with rice or noodles. During the trekking phase we will cook locally-bought food.

The team will take a mixture of public coaches, the train and private minibuses for long-distance travel.

The open expeditions are aimed at young people aged 15-19.

Over the 6 month process, the team will receive comprehensive training on topics such as culture, staying healthy and safe on exped, campcraft skills, leadership and teamwork and basic first aid. It is an essential part of their preparation but most importantly it is where they meet the leader and the team begins to form.

Minimum Fitness Requirements

At the first training the team will be given a reccommended kit list. The kit required is similar to that needed for a multi-day camping trek in HK winter time, with a few extras for the colder and potentially wetter weather.

The programme will be delivered in English throughout, therefore for safety and group dynamic reasons it is expected that joining participants have a good level of spoken English to fully participate. However a Cantonese leader will be in the Leadership Team and can help supplement briefings if needed.

At times expedition life can be physically and mentally tiring. We highly recommend that to fully enjoy the experience all participants undertake some form of physical training in their own time.  Horizon Line Expeditions are achievable by anyone with an OK level of fitness and a positive attitude.

Our aim to be as inclusive as possible, so for participants that we feel do not have a sufficient base level of fitness we may create a training action plan to help. We will keep in touch to ensure they are on track to a healthier and expedition ready lifestyle.

Get in touch with any fitness, health, kit or training questions which remain unanswered.
